Comments: It's another beautiful morning in Falcon, Colorado on the 3rd of July, so what could be more appropriate than to review an all American Cigar from an all American manufacturer, John Hay Cigars. Upon removing the cellophane I was presented with a wrapper having a somewhat uneven color but never-the-less an inviting, though somewhat rugged appearance and a very nice earthy bouquet. Gently pinching the stick exposed a rather loose construction, more so than I would have liked. Lighting the cigar revealed a draw that was as easy as the "pinch" test hinted. Drawing a generous volume of smoke was not a problem though it tended to be a little on the hot side. The moisture content of this cigar seemed to be a little high, even after nearly a two week rest in my humidor accounting for a difficulty keeping the cigar lit. (My humidor maintains 65% to 68%RH at 70F.) The ash produced was of a light gray color and fragile, dropping large flakes for the duration. Some people claim that a few cigar ashes on the carpet are actually good for it... my wife disagrees. That made this an outdoor cigar. The aroma of this smoke was pleasant and woody. But of course we all know that what really counts is how the cigar tastes... and in spite of its construction issues, the flavor was actually quite good. The John Hay Pennsylvania Natural started with a mild-to-medium bodied flavor of cedar with a sweet note of nuts, building to a fuller bodied finish of cedar. This predominate flavor carried a hint of spice from beginning to end. Overall, for the money, this is not a bad cigar. If $10 per stick quality is what you are expecting in this smoke, you won't find it. But you will find that the John Hay folks have done a good job with the tobacco blend... Lighting one of these with realistic expectations will deliver your money's worth, because in spite of it's flaws, it's still a better cigar than most in this price range.
This is the second in a series of reviews on John Hay products, there are more coming! So come back and see us. Check out John Hay Cigars web site too, these folks look like they're having far too much fun!
History: (From Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars, 2006) Not listed. From the John Hay Cigar web site: These John Hay Cigars are still being rolled - one at a time - on century old, hand-fed machines. This cigar is made with all natural tobacco, using a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper, Pennsylvania binder and a medium-filler blend from Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania - no homogenized products, short fillers or scraps are ever used. This all-American cigar is offered in boxes of 50 and 5 pack sampler boxes as well as humidors. Machine-made one at a time in Pennsylvania, USA.
